Key to Freedom supporting Women’s Interlink Foundation

The University of Huddersfield is supporting this charity and has approached Robertson Baxter for their assistance in getting support for this worthwhile charity Key to Freedom. This charity has been set up to support the Womens Interlink Foundation (WIF) by giving them a platform to sell their products. WIF works across West Bengal, India, helping vulnerable young women develop skills to earn an income.

Most of these young women have been exposed, since early childhood, to domestic abuse and in most cases have been trafficked into the sex trade. The sale of these products to a wider customer group allows the women who sew and dye the garments to earn a living and regain control of the choices in their lives.

The Key to Freedom project was initiated in 2012, after The Duke of York visited India as part of Her Majesty The Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations. This was followed by a private visit by Sarah, Duchess of York and Princess Eugenie, who met with the girls. They helped develop their creative ideas and lift the project off the ground.

Designer Penny McIvor and the Topshop team travelled to WIF to advise and collaborate with the girls, further developing their skills. The Duke of Yorks office continues to manage the project and develop a long term vision for expanding the Key to Freedom model.

How it works:

  • A girl is rescued from a vulnerable situation, most likely she is a victim of human trafficking, a modern day slavery
  • She is given a home by the Womens Interlink Foundation. She is cared for and taught craft skills
  • She produces a garment (eg sarong )and signs her work
  • Payment is made into the girls bank accounts
  • The sarong is shipped to Topshop
  • Topshop sells the sarong
  • Taking no profit from the sale, Topshop pass the proceeds on to The Prince Andrew Charitable Trust (PACT)
  • PACT pass the funds on directly to the Womens Interlink Foundation

These funds are used by the Womens Interlink Foundation to rescue more girls and in the future, to build more homes.

Robertson Baxter are delighted to support this charity and Greg Robertson will be attending the lunch where Sarah, the Duchess of York will be the guest of honour on Tuesday 16th June 2015 at The University of Huddersfield, Storthes Hall Campus, Huddersfield.

If you would like to join Greg please contact Gillian Kitson (PA to Directors) by email : gillian@robertsonbaxter.com NO LATER THAN MONDAY 8TH JUNE 2015 .  Please note that a donation of 500 per person will be required. All money raised at the lunch will go to WIF in order to rescue and support more young women and to build new homes.
