Work Experience at Robertson Baxter

I started my two week work experience with Robertson Baxter with the aim to gather an insight into the world of finance and understand which aspect of finance I would potentially see myself going into after my degree. Not having a financial background wasn’t an issue as all the members of the Robertson Baxter team were very supportive and gave me the necessary help, no matter how fundamental it may have seemed. They were admirably organised, exchanging emails and phone calls weeks before my arrival to book me onto certain events and making sure I knew what time to get there and where they were located. On arrival I was given a day to day itinerary planned for my two week experience which involved a great variety of things such as shadowing members in the office, sitting in on client and internal meetings and going to a seminar and events outside of the office with a financial advisor. The timetable they produced kept me busy for good lengths of time, but also allowed for some down time where it was good to reflect on what had just been discussed. It was evident that they had listened to what I wanted to get out of my time at Robertson Baxter as the range of tasks allowed me to really achieve what I set out to do, giving me ideas into what people in the different departments do on a day to day basis and allowing me to evaluate what role I would potentially enjoy getting into.

Throughout my time at Robertson Baxter the people were fantastic, answering any questions I had and always making sure I had something to do. They explained everything very thoroughly and found time in meetings to explain what it was they wanted to get out of the meetings, running me through things as they went along. They understood the way I worked and subsequently tailored the tasks to suit my way of learning. The two days out of the office with Anthony Barton to Leeds and Hull were a great way to see another aspect of what advisors do as well as their work in the office, and proved to be a great experience getting one on one time with an advisor and getting their opinions and insights into the financial world. Additionally Stephen Baxter took time out to talk to me over lunch about how he got into finance and what his role is and how it has changed over time. Being able to talk to different people in all departments and quiz them on their backgrounds and what their role is was extremely useful as it allowed me to gain a picture to how Robertson Baxter operates and offers an insight into the finance industry. Robertson Baxter are open minded into what roles are potentially available to me, even if it isn’t within their firm. From my abilities and skill set they have suggested some roles in finance which are outside the boundaries of what they cover at Robertson Baxter. This is particularly refreshing as in recommending these alternative roles shows how committed they are in providing the best advice possible, whether it be a client or people like myself on work experience.
